Is life worth living? This is not a question about the universe, it's a question about the spirit in which a person faces the universe. The cosmos is to a large degree mechanistic. So much happens according to predetermined laws. Give a young man the keys of the car, though, and he may, or may not drive it responsibly. Free choice and creative desire kick in. It’s not just what happens, it’s the human response to what happens. Paul said, “all things work together for good. On it’s own, that statement is plainly wrong. But he went on to say . . . “to them that love God.” A life inspired and guided by the love of God finds inner strengthening, things worth striving for, and meaning, even in misfortune. “All things work together for good----to them that love God” (Romans 8:28). |
